Known for providing desktop accounting software power with the convenience of the cloud, Sage 50 gives small business users a total view of their finances all in one place. However, effective Sept. 30, 2023, due to changes to TLS 1.0 and 1.1 security protocols, these Sage 50 US Editions will cause an error to occur that will prevent small business users from accessing the software upon reinstallation or reactivation.
What is TLS?
TLS stands for Transport Layer Security. Related to security protocols, these are third party components that, due to security-related issues, Sage no longer supports in their software. As a result, they have been “formally retired”.
Note: Newer versions of Sage 50 no longer utilize TLS 1.0 and 1.1
Why have TLS 1.0 and 1.1 been retired?
TLS 1.0 and 1.1 are, in effect, vulnerable to potential security breaches. The decision to no longer support them is based upon recommendations of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) that sets Internet standards.
The IETF now recommends using TLS 1.2 and 1.3 because of their stronger encryption algorithms and enhanced security features. Sage has made the decision to align with industry recommendations.
What problems can Sage 50 2020.1 and earlier version users expect if they don’t upgrade their Sage 50 software by Sept 30?
As mentioned above, after September 30, 2023, users of the affected version of Sage 50 will not be able to access the software when they reinstall or reactivate it. Basically, when the software attempts a license validation check, users will encounter an error.
Business operations will inevitably be disrupted at some point after Sept 30, 2023, for those small businesses that have not been made aware of this issue or have chosen to disregard it. And, as we all know, business disruptions always happen at the worst possible time.
What Do Sage 50 2020.1 (and earlier) users need to do?
To bypass the likely operations disruptions and their fallout, we strongly urge you to upgrade to the latest supported version of Sage 50 – Sage 50 2023.0. This is the one way you’ll be assured that your accounting software functions securely and smoothly as Sept 30, 2023 segues into October 2023 and beyond.
Granted, software transitions and upgrades have an overwhelming aspect to them. Most often the perceived challenge in making the change takes precedence over the real challenges that “standing still” will cause. But . . .
